Who Wants Friends Like This Woman's Friends?? I do, I do, me, me! I think I've waited all my life to see and hear a warm-hearted story such as this one! It is quite literally one of my favorite true stories of all time!
As I watch the video, I sense the closeness the two women have and the scene melts my heart! I hope all who care will watch this video and take with them a renewed sense of what they can do to bring enormous joy to others who are enduring tremendous challenges in life!
According to her, her friends stick around out of love and not pity! Since she has the full capacity of her mind, she laughs, jokes, and communicates with her friends.
Even though this is a feel-good story, I can’t help but think how sad so many people who are in the same position this woman is in, but they spend most of their days alone and lonely! I met a person like this!
I don’t remember his name because it was so many years ago that I have forgotten it. He was a young adult patient at a children’s hospital where I worked in the Volunteers’ Office. In this office, we had a toy store (I loved that store!). I met him one day when he stopped by to visit; we had lots of children; who felt well enough, to stop by for a visit and to pick up a toy (I got very emotional on those days!).
Anyhow, back to the story about the young man:
He was bedridden but sitting up and talking, this surprised me since the nurses brought his large bed to the office and parked it in the doorway next to my desk just inside on the left and my boss’s office was a little farther away from the right. My boss’s (I’ll call her Ms. W) face turned beet red at the site! I listened closely to hear what toy I had to search the toy store for because the patient couldn’t go pick one out! It’s funny, I don’t remember what toy or magazine he picked out! But, I’ll never forget his reaction to our conversation at the time. We were discussing having volunteers greet visitors at the front hospital’s main entrance. When he overheard what we were discussing, he abruptly piped in that he’d be willing to volunteer for the position! He said it with such excitement, I was excited for him and smiled at him!
Upon hearing his response though, I don’t know why I didn’t see my boss’s reaction to his offer coming! I do not remember what she said to him (for some reason) it was 20 years ago! Needless to say, he was not taken seriously, and I found out why right after he left.
Ms.W curtly spilled out how what she really thought about the patient’s volunteer offer. She told us (staff) that there was no way the hospital would okay a bedridden patient to be situated at the front entrance because it would make the hospital look bad! I was floored and sad at hearing this! I thought, “That poor young man is a prisoner in his own body!”
Seriously, I didn’t mean to deflect from this happy story to make you feel sad, I simply want to help others realize how truly wonderful true friendship is! They’ll look out for you when others let you down and treat you like you’re nothing!
Please, enjoy the video!:
